IN THE MIDDLE of Tuesday afternoon, Trace walked into the boys’ bathroom and stopped in his tracks. Sal Torres stood at the sink, washing his hands. Trace thought about turning around and walking out again, then decided he wasn’t going to let a Spic chase him out of the john.

Torres was still there when he stepped up to the sink. He sent a sneering grin through the mirror. “Couldn’t hold it till you got home?”

Trace rolled his eyes. “I notice you’re in here, too.”

“Yeah, well, some of us have things to do when school gets out. You white boys wouldn’t know anything about actually having to work in order to eat.”

“You wetbacks wouldn’t know anything about keeping a job for more than a couple of weeks. That’s why my dad had to get rid of your old man—couldn’t afford to keep him on the payroll when he didn’t show up every day.”

Torres turned to look at him directly. “What do you mean?”

“You heard me. My dad fired your dad because he came to work drunk, or didn’t show up at all.” Trace shrugged. “Like father, like son.”

“You’re telling me.” Torres tore off a paper towel and dried his hands. “I can’t figure out how you and Kelsey could possibly be part of the same family. She’s a human being. And you—” He dropped his towel into the trash can and walked to the exit, then looked back over his shoulder. “You’re the black ooze at the bottom of a dead river.”

Trace stood speechless as Torres left. Black ooze? What kind of stupid insult was that?

Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t think of a single decent comeback.
